What are nutraceuticals?

For the definition of nutraceuticals, we have to go back to 1989. It was then that US physician Stephen L. DeFelice first referred to the term 'nutraceuticals', which is a contraction of the English words 'nutrition' and 'pharmaceuticals'.

For philosophy, we have to go back a lot further in time to the most famous Greek doctor Hippocrates. He saw food as medicine to stay physically and mentally healthy.

Nutraceuticals are derivatives of foods that combine a basic nutritional value (fats, proteins, carbohydrates) with healthy extras (vitamins and minerals). Nutraceuticals is an umbrella term for nutrients, plant extracts or supplements, among others.

What are the benefits of nutraceuticals?

Nutraceuticals are used preventively to improve health. As such, they are said to help slow down the ageing process, help prevent chronic diseases and increase life expectancy.

Of course, do not expect a miracle cure for serious diseases. The biggest advantage of nutraceuticals is that they support health without unwanted side effects.

Can I take nutraceuticals if I feel healthy?

Many people understand health as the absence of symptoms of disease. But have you ever thought about the debilitating fatigue you sometimes just experience? Or the hard-to-pronounce ingredients on your frozen meal? This is precisely why it can be interesting to take nutraceuticals, even if you feel seemingly healthy.

Are nutraceuticals natural?

Yes, nutraceuticals are natural. For instance, nutraceuticals do not contain glazing agents, humectants, stabilisers, colourings or sweeteners. The supplements are also in a plant-based jacket of cellulose. Purasana always aims to stay as close as possible to its natural origins with its supplements.
