What Are Fibres?

Dietary fibres have several health benefits. For instance, they can help regulate blood sugar levels. However, one of the most important benefits of fibres is their effect on our digestion. Fibres contribute to healthy digestion by promoting bowel movements and keeping the gut clean.

Our gut contains millions of bacteria that help digest food and regulate our immune system. Fibres act as prebiotics, serving as food for these beneficial bacteria. This, in turn, can help promote a healthy gut flora and reduce inflammation in the gut.

The Importance of Plant-Based Fibres

We can consume various fibre types, but plant-based fibres are the most common. Plant-based fibres are found in foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These fibres are generally healthier than fibres from processed foods because they contain more nutrients.

Psyllium and acacia fibres are two plant-based fibre types becoming increasingly popular as supplements. Psyllium fibres are derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant and act as a bulk-forming agent. They absorb water, making the stool softer and easier to pass through the gut. Psyllium can be beneficial for relieving constipation.

Acacia fibres are derived from the sap of the acacia tree and have a prebiotic effect. They can help promote healthy gut flora and reduce inflammation in the gut. Acacia fibres have a milder taste and texture, and mix well in smoothies and shakes.
