Spirulina is strictly speaking not an algae, but a cyanobacterium. Like algae, this microscopic bacterium can perform photosynthesis. This is why spirulina is sometimes called blue algae or blue-green algae. Spirulina owes its blue-green colour to a combination of the green pigment chlorophyll and the blue pigment phycocyanin.
