There is a delicious warm drink. Well-known tea types like green tea are known to be healthy for you. Just like pu-erh tea. This special tea comes from the Far East and is made from the same tea plant as green tea.
Pu-erh tea is made from the tea plant Camellia sinensis and originally comes from the Chinese province of Yunnan. Camellia sinensis is therefore the same tea plant from which green tea is made. The main difference between green tea and pu-erh tea is the fermentation process.
What makes pu-erh tea so special is the fermentation process. After harvesting, the tea is aged for a long time under high humidity. This is different from green tea, which is only dried after the tea leaves are picked. By aging under high humidity, there is enough moisture and enzymes present for fermentation. During fermentation, fungi and bacteria convert substances in a product, changing its aroma, flavor, or appearance. Think, for example, of yogurt or bread.
Due to the unique fermentation process, the dark red color of the tea and its characteristic flavor emerge. Pu-erh tea is known for its full, rich, and earthy tones. The fermentation can take months to years. The older the tea, the softer the taste. Some people find the flavor a bit too intense at times. It's best to mix the tea with more water in that case.
The (High) Health Council advises to drink three cups of green or black tea daily. Pu-erh tea is fermented green tea and is therefore also suitable for daily consumption. The 3 benefits of Pu-erh tea are:
